Historic Monument

he Kosciuszko Mound in Krakow and its surroundings – the Chapel of Blessed Bronisława and the fort – have been enlisted, along with another 10 sites, as Historic Monuments. The President of the Kosciuszko Mound Committee in Krakow, Professor Mieczysław Rokosz, received a presidential decree on the Kosciuszko Mound from President Andrzej Duda during an official gala in the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.

During the ceremony, the President emphasised that the Kosciuszko Mound in Krakow is not only an engineering masterpiece, but also a great monument. ‘I rejoice that the Kosciuszko Mound is enlisted in the year that commemorates Thaddeus Kosciuszko in a special way – the Year of Thaddeus Kosciuszko that falls on the 200th anniversary of his death. I am proud to say that this outstanding, national site becomes a part of the Historic Monument List.’

Historic Monument is the most prestigious form of protection over historic sites in Poland, awarded since 1994. Objects of particular material and intangible value and importance to the country’s cultural heritage are enlisted. Up till now, the list comprised 70 entries, including Malbork Castle, the Westerplatte battlefield, Jasna Góra Monastery, or the historical districts of such cities as Warsaw, Krakow, and Poznań.
